WICKED APPETITE by Janet Evanovich
I dub this paranormal chick lit and I enjoyed the ride. Very fun, reminiscent of Stephanie Plum series. Quirky, hot characters, zany antics, and troublesome sidekicks, including a snarky broom. The reason Evanovich is such an easy read is she surprises us with unexpected, unthinkable, yet plausible situations (at least you wish they could happen), in addition to creating truly awesome tension-filled relationships. WICKED APPETITE is the perfect combo of sparks and spooks!
GIVIN' UP THE GHOST by Gwen Gardner
I am so happy I finally finished a book by one of my blogger buddies! This YA paranormal romance is a wonderful introduction to a new mystery series starring teen clairvoyant, Indigo Eady. Packed with cute, spunky characters, a hint of heat, and a dash of ghostly mayhem, Indigo's first case is full of fun and suspense.
I only had a couple of crits. Set in modern day London, the British vernacular was a bit out of date - I don't think "blimey" is something a teen would say these days. And though a mystery needs a bunch of suspects, I had a hard time keeping them straight sometimes, but that might just be me. Neither of these small stones hindered the story, just suggestions to watch for in the next one, which I look forward to reading!
My favorite parts involved the ghosts themselves. Indigo, and only Indigo, can communicate with them - and they each have entertaining personalities. And the names of the pubs cracked me up! Gwen did an excellent job developing all the characters and creating conflict and danger to keep the story moving right along. Keep 'em coming, Gwen!
But wait! I finished another one! This is a record for me.
1301 - THE MARQUIS by Christine Rains
Christine has woven an intriguing underground world of disturbed paranormal beings hiding their identities from humans and their own kind. They reside on the 13th Floor that doesn't exist in an old apartment building in the subdued, dark city of Carmine. In this first tale, we meet Marc, the Grand Marquis, a retired demon that Hell wants back. But he's grown attached to our world and in particular, a sweet barista named Mae. When an old nemesis comes to claim Marc for some recognition as a greater demon, a destructive battle ensues and Marc has to make a drastic choice. Thrilling, suspenseful, high tension and stakes! I'm hungry for more, especially looking forward to reading about that Dragonslayer in 1303!
What are you reading? Read any of these? I recommend them all!
I'm so burned out on YA paranormals, I still can't look at them. I didn't know Janet Evanovich wrote them.
ReplyDeleteI lived in England as a child many many years ago and no one said blimey. It could be a regional thing, though.
I just finished The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey - really good! - and am about to start Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. Looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteNot my preferred genre, but I know it's very popular and I wish these authors all the very best!
ReplyDeletei love this feedback from writers as readers! very informative!
ReplyDeleteThey all sound great! I'm really looking forward to reading Christine's.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reviews and happy Monday. ☺
Two blogger buddy books - very cool!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading the review copy of Ciara's upcoming book.
Thanks for the lovely review, Tara! I will return the favor when you're published :)
ReplyDeleteTrying to wrap up The Inventor's Secret this week, but you've given me some good titles to consider for the next go-around. :)
ReplyDeleteSo many books, so little time. That MARQUIS cover gives me goosebumps though! So awesome.
ReplyDeleteI need to add them all to my list!
ReplyDeleteI've read Wicked Appetite. I think that's the first book in the series, right? Paranormal Chick Lit is a perfect description. If someone likes the Stephanie Plum novels, they should like this one.
ReplyDeleteYay! I own all of these books. :D I just need to read two of them.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I heart Diesel.
Without the "para" in normal then all we have left is normal.
ReplyDeleteAnd normal is so boring.
I've sincerely slacked off on my reading lately. Most of what I read is school oriented these days :(
ReplyDeleteI love Janet Evanovich's work. So much fun. As for me, I keep starting books and deciding that they aren't that great. My reading pile is littered with books I couldn't finish the first 50 pages, so I can't recommend them.
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy Incarnate and Asunder by Jodi Meadows though.
Sounds like some fun reading here! I haven't burned myself out on paranormal romance yet, but I will say I'm a bit over vampires. Why is it hot to love a dead thing? :P
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of them, but I will now! Love me some paranormal romance!
ReplyDeleteI don't read a lot of YA but I love Evanovich. I'll give that one a try. Thanks for the suggestion.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment I'm reading a novel by a famous local writer called Deon Meyer.

ReplyDeleteBlimey, that's a good post ;) I couldn't resist. It's old fashioned indeed. Great reviews though!
ReplyDelete(I'll hurry up and edit my own contemp?!)
I enjoyed Gwen & Christine's too.
ReplyDeleteEvanovich sounds good too.
Happy Tuesday, Tara :)
Thanks so much for the review. I'm happy you liked it. Evanovich is hilarious. Her books make me laugh out loud. I have Gwen's book, but I've yet to read it. I need more reading time!
ReplyDeleteI don't read much YA, but I do love paranormal or fantasy elements. Glad you enjoyed all those books!
ReplyDeleteI'll pretty much read anything Janet E. puts out. I still think she's funny even if her stuff gets slightly repetitive. I almost always laugh out loud while reading.
ReplyDeleteI love the Christine rains series. I just started #1303 but I got sidetracked by editing.
Speaking of editing...how goes it? Very excited to see what's next for you!
