Brilliance in School

Today I have a Drabble about school and haiku for Sensational Haiku Wednesday about brilliance - a perfect match =)

As a bossy child, I loved to play school and be the teacher and teach my little sister everything I learned. I decided to become a math teacher when I saw my friends in high school struggling in math because the teachers we had were dry, boring, or too book smart – understanding math is hard, teaching it to be understood is harder. I don’t love math, but I get it. I love the look on a kid’s face when they realize they know how to solve a problem. That is my goal.

Education is learning. Brilliance is application of education.

Measuring brilliance
To what should it be compared?
Anyone can be

Get education
To learn as much as able
Bril-li-ant future

Brilliance is using
The brain power you have to
Sparkle in the world

Have a nice visit?

Happy New Drabble! A short diversion, from Aheila's weekly prompt. This week it's "visit."

Have a Nice Trip? See ya Next Fall!

Have you ever seen such a magnificent sight?

No.

And the colors. Brilliant, aren’t they?

I guess.

Ever seen them arranged in such a way?

No.

Green, blue…

Red.

Purple, yellow, pink.

Black.

Why must you be so negative?

This is gross.

It’s beautiful!

It’s making me uncomfortable.

Why?

I endure coming all this way to hunt with you. And I actually like outwitting the beasts and killing them. But watching the dissection before we eat them makes me lose my appetite!

I blame this drabble on the fact that I recently saw Cowboys vs Aliens - great movie! Have you seen any good movies lately? I'm still looking forward to my Sherlock Holmes date!

IWSG & an accidental haiku

Dear Blog Friends,
I'm going to tell you a story that you may be familiar with...

Once upon a time I finished a novel. Then I researched, why not get it published? How hard can it be? I found out that in our new techie age I needed to start a blog and advertise myself in addition to the query process. So I did. When I was rejected several times I realized my book was called "chick lit" that no one wanted, besides being terribly written. I worked on it, realized it needed too much work, then picked up writing a new novel. I am now revising and think this one has a much better shot. In the mean time, the blogging really picked up - I made many friends and followers and learned so much! For that I am so grateful!

But I'm having trouble keeping up with so many blogs. Picking and choosing which articles to comment on is getting harder. And I want to write and edit more so I've stopped blogging on the weekends and will cut back more in January. I'm sure it will be fine as I've seen others cut back and absence really does make the heart grow fonder. My question this month is this: Many of you follow hundreds of blogs. How do you balance writing and still comment?

Sincerely,
Back Log Betty
humble member of the Insecure Writers Support Group

And now for SENSATIONAL HAIKU WEDNESDAY, malice, plus DRABBLE prompt accident.

Happy Holidays

We need thicker skin
Oversensitive people
Ban "Merry Christmas"

Sore spot touched upon
With careless comment spoken
No intent to hurt

Words' meaning twisted
Accidental malice heard
Always think ere spew

Ribbon of Dusk

I've been missing Aheila's drabble prompts, but this week it fits with my PAD #29, two for Tuesday - Daytime & Evening for a poetic ribbon drabble.

Dusk

That moment between
Light and darkness
Beautiful sight

Ribbon of pink and orange hues
Separates the day
From the night

Sun still blazes, through
Cloud hazes, evening
Fireplace ignite

Days' hours grow shorter
Nights grow colder
Cozy up tight

Happy Haunted Hallows Eve!

It's here! It's here! It's here!
I hope you got into the "spirit" of the holiday and wrote a Haunted Drabble! You can still think one up real quick, right? Post it on your blog and link to it or just write it in the comments. I planned on writing a spooky, haunted tale, but if you know me, you know I can’t do the expected. Here is my scary Halloween story… May it never happen to you!

“Please, Mommy?”

Not today, honey. We need to get to the party.”

We weave through people and displays. Why is it always crowded when I’m in a hurry?

“Ok, sweetie. Which cupcakes should we get?”

I look down and Justin isn’t there. I whip around and don’t see him. My heart stops. “Justin?”

I start to panic. “Justin!” I call louder. I give a crooked smile to the condescending glance of an elderly lady. What did he want? Toys?

I keep looking, my pulse racing. “Justin!”

Then I see the tip of a ninja sword across the counter. I rush over and hug him.

“Here, mommy. I got you a free cookie!”

“You’re so thoughtful, sweetie.”

Tears well up with my relief. I take a deep breath. So what if we're late?

This kind of scene haunts me the most.
The treat(s) a surprise. Must see what everyone has to offer! And maybe I'll scare you with my costume later =) Be safe, everybody!

ps, Theresa is hosting a Halloween Haunt thru Nov 2 - lots of fun! go see!

Kick start Monday - Killer characters & a Halloween tale

E.R. King's join if you dare!Killer Characters Blogfest!
On this first day we are to name killer supporting characters. What I love in a killer supporting character is a comlpimentary disposition to the MC. A smooth camaraderie, witty banter, encouragement, someone to bounce ideas off of and knock sense into. Best friends who would sacrifice themselves for the other. My favorite two are Dr. Watson from Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Baloo from the Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and I had a hard time choosing, figuratively anyway...

AND

I entered this drabble in 2 contests/challenges over the weekend =) First, Janet Reid had one of her flash fiction contests w/ 6 words to use in a 100 word halloween story & Chuck Wendig @ Terrible Minds limited his Friday Flash challenge to 100 words about bullies. I love combo prompts! Here's my entry.

“One more house, Jaelyn?” She's a witch and I'm a ghost this year.

“Sure.”

“Oh, no! Bryce and Dane!” I point at the zombies.

“I’m not giving up my candy!”

“Me either! This way!”

The bullies chase us through backyards. Their years of torturing us kids end tonight.

I lead us to the playground and we hide.

“Come on out. We just want to play.” They laugh.

I blow my special whistle with no sound.

Unforsaken creatures appear and surround the fake zombies. Their deadly eyes hypnotize. The smell of decay overpowers. They slay the boys before they can scream.

I won't use this for my Haunted Drabble next Monday, I went w/a different kind of scary for that...

Sorry!

Well, Aheila put her Drabble Day up late yesterday and was Sorry, so that is our theme =)

Sorry!
I used to like that game. Until I played with James. He kept landing on me. And it wasn't that he landed on me. It was what he did after.

“Sorry!” he would sing song at me with a huge grin on his face.
“Sorry, I got you again!”
“Ooops. Sorry!”
Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.
I can’t erase his fat face with his round glasses and his satisfied smirk. I just wanted to smack it!
But I’m no quitter. I finished the game and kept my mouth shut.
Just wait until tomorrow, James. We’re playing Aggravation.
“Good night, Suzie. Sweet dreams.”
“Good night, Mom.” Oh, I’ll have sweet dreams. Of sending James back Home crying while I say, Sorry!

PS, Robin Weeks is hosting a pitch contest. Check it out!

Gumshoe

Aheila's drabble day prompt this week is "shoe" with bonus challenge to begin and end in the street. My word association produced this.

Gumshoe

I open my eyes to darkness.

Where am I?

I feel my head. Ouch! What a lump!

Think, Mason. What’s the last thing you remember?

The warehouse. To meet Melanie. Pick up evidence.

I got it all right.

So where am I? I get up and start walking. A sign. Highway 82, mile 43. IE, BFE.

Headlights approach. The car stops. It’s Melanie.

“Get in.” I do.

She eyes me. “Rocko followed me. I didn’t know until you arrived. I had to scram.”

I nod.

“Take the envelope. Jump out at this gas station.” Our eyes lock. “I’ll be in touch.”

She slows. I hit the road and roll.

Women.

BTW! M Pax's novel Semper Audacia came out today! Help celebrate!!

Come back here on Monday, October 31 to join in a spooky 100 word or so "Haunted Drabble" *insane laughter*

Train Wreck

Time for a drabble. Aheila's drabble day prompt this week is train with extra brownie points for a wreck. Here you go!

Train Wreck

The light blinds me through my eyelids. My head is throbbing.

Throbbing to the beat of that song stuck in my head,
that song I danced to with that guy,
that guy with the messy shag of hair,
that hair I wanted to rub my fingers through...
What a party!

I stretch and shuffle to the bathroom.

Mirror, do not show myself to me.
I know my mascara has run
and my lipstick is smeared
and my hair is shooting at opposing angles.

When I emerge, my yawn is interrupted and my eyes pop awake, splattering sleepy crust.

"Woah, babe, you look like a..."

"Don't say it!"

Drabble Day is back! + haikus!

Tomorrow is our next campaign challenge! Rachael posted the winners of the last challenge, in case you didn't see. 384 entries - hard to believe! crazy to judge! Here's one more exercise I have missed doing, to get me geared up.

Aheila took a short break, and now she's back! Yay! The Drabble Day word this week is - glow. I added my haikus to compliment the story, from Jenn's Sensational Haiku Wednesday.

“Hey, Jess.”

I jump. “Oh! Hi, Kennedy.”

“You dropped your pencil.”

“Thanks.”

“Is something wrong?”

I'm way overdue
Pray this can't be happening.
I'm too young for this.
“Uh, no. I’m fine. I just have a math quiz and I didn’t study.” Do I look like something is wrong? Am I acting weird?

“Okay. See you later then. Good luck.”

When she’s gone, I dash into the bathroom and check out my face. Am I glowing? I look down and feel my stomach. Am I showing?

I don’t want to think about it and it’s all I think about. I need to act normal. Acting normal is the hardest thing to do. What’s normal?

Meanwhile, there exists the opposite.
I dedicate these to my anticipatory cousin. Praying for blue =)

Waiting for result
After endless hormone shots
Joy or drawing board

Longest ten minutes
I cover my eyes and peek
Tell me, is it blue?

Disappear

Aheila's Drabble Day! She will be taking a break for a while so she chose the theme of “disappear” this week. What will I do next week? Guess I'll figure it out later. For now, here's my drabble.

Let Me Disappear
I hear them in their desperate
Search. They shout my name,
I answer not. I need
This bit of respite.

My head is aching. They can
Do without me for
A few minutes more.
My sweet haven.

I’ve disappeared.
I close my eyes,
Feel the breeze,
Hear the birds,
Smell the fresh cut grass,
And sigh.

“Mom! There you are!”
I press a finger to my lips.
He smiles and joins me
Outside in the sun.

Semi peace with one
is better than none.

kick start monday - just do it!

Shelly is giving me the best prize for winning the poetry schmoetry contest a couple weeks ago. It's overwhelming to see myself promoted on another site. I'm a bit nervous. I want to have good posts this week and with my recent tragedy, I was feeling down, especially thinking about him being younger than me and leaving behind a family. The worst part is feeling helpless because they live so far away. I appreciate all the kind words and will do my best to write my way back up.

At least I knew I could depend on Aheila's Drabble Day prompt to motivate me. This week it's "dye"

Get on the Train

I get some crazy ideas, especially while I’m in the shower. Here is an example of my convoluted train of thought. As I reach for my color enhancing shampoo, I wish the dye didn’t fade so quickly. Someone should make a shampoo that colors while you wash. But it would probably stain the shower. That would be a pain to clean, and I already hate cleaning it. What I really need is a shower that cleans itself. Or a robot. Like in that movie, “I, Robot” with Will Smith. He needs to do another movie. Maybe he could star in the movie version of my book. I guess I’d better finish editing before he’s too old!

Hourglass

Shelly said Blog is an ugly word. I agree with her. But hourglass, now there's a pretty word. This week Aheila's Drabble Day prompt is hourglass.

As Vanessa watched the last grain of sand slip through the hourglass, she found a burst of strength to break through the rope she'd been scraping on the iron back of her chair.

When the door squeaked open, she hurried over to hide behind it.

"Vanessa?"

With her doubled fist, she konked her kidnapper unconscious.

Vanessa ran down the hall, white dress trailing.

When she reached the double doors, she thought, Freedom! and burst through.

Only to find the handsome prince waiting at the altar.

"NOooo!" she wailed as her father escorted her kicking and screaming down the aisle.

Enjoy the Silence

Remember that Depeche Mode song? Well, Aheila's Drabble Day this week is about Silence. Shhh!

It’s quiet. I’m not used to no noise. Great! I should be able to get several things accomplished. My list is a mile long. What should I start with?
But wait. It’s too quiet. What could they be doing?
No. I need to leave them alone. I’m sure they’re fine. No one is yelling. I should let them play nicely until someone hollers.
I have to choose something quick. Nothing on my list is quick. I know if I start something involved, they will start fighting and I’ll have to drop what I’m doing.
I’ll just peek in on them.

Time for a Light Drabble

Yes. The Drabble topic this week is "light." Thanks Aheila.

You could have made that! Can't you see I'm in a hurry?
Now I have to sit and wait through the whole cycle. And there’s nothing on the radio. How does every station have commercials on?
Is this longer than normal? It’s been at least two minutes.
Let's see. No texts on my phone.
I should use this time to practice my patience. Hey, kids in the back seat! Be quiet!
Okay. I see yellow the other way. Finally it’s almost our turn!
What? No arrow! The person in front of me wasn’t pulled up far enough.
Stupid light!

Potent Potable

Time for another Flash Fiction, sponsored by Chuck Wendig at Terrible Minds. The prompt is confusing because you have to mix up given genres...I blended Steampunk with Superhero and a dash of Farce (I love farce). This time there was a prize of a critique so I tried a little harder. I'm sure there are better ones, and with the 1000 word limit I had to cut it down. Ah well, tis the challenge =)

ps - I am also offering the 1st two paragraphs for Aheila's drabble day, unwanted guest. Since I'm mixing, might as well combine challenges too, eh?

Potent Potable

“I, Professor Mathias J. Cornelius, do now reveal to you this magnificent, stupendous elixir, guar-on-TEED to make you stronger, wiser and extend the days of your life!”

The Professor had arrived that morning, attracting a crowd. They watched the large man set up a stage in front of his wagon with its patchwork cover and clanging decorations. Now that he had everyone’s attention, he used his charismatic personality to peddle his concoction.

“Get a load o’ this medicine man!” Jeb said to his friend and jabbed him in the ribs.

“Ow! Whadya do that for?” Nehemiah asked and elbowed him back causing him to stumble.

Jeb laughed. “Jest seein’ if you’re a-WAKE!” he said, emphasizing “wake” with a hard slap to Nehemiah’s back.

Nehemiah fell forward and bumped into Carl, the big, burly son of the blacksmith. Carl slowly turned around and gave Nehemiah the “You’re playin with your life” stare down.

Nehemiah tipped his hat and crept backwards to his spot. Jeb shook, ready to burst out laughing. When Carl turned back around, Nehemiah punched Jeb in the arm.

The Professor had continued his oration and was now asking for a volunteer. Jeb raised Nehemiah’s arm for him.

“Ah, it seems we do have a brave soul here in…”

“Possum Gulch,” whispered an invisible assistant.

“…Possum Glitch.”

The audience parted to reveal Jeb and Nehemiah about to come to blows. The young men froze when they noticed all eyes had turned to them.

“You, there. What is your name?”

“It’s Nehemiah!” Jeb shouted.

Nehemiah punched his friend in the arm again but Jeb was too giddy with his great joke to care.

“Strong name. It deserves a strong frame to go with it. Right folks?”

The crowd agreed with laughter and cheers. Carl showed a disturbing, gap-toothed smile as he helped/pulled Nehemiah to the front.

Nehemiah tripped up the stairs to the stage, drawing more laughter. When he righted himself, he noticed the strange metal gadgets hanging from the top of the wagon were not just wind chimes or pots. They had gears and points, maybe they were tools.

Nehemiah turned to face the audience and frowned at Jeb who was laughing hysterically and slapping his knee.

“Now tell me, son, what do you do?”

“I work at Two Diamonds.” After he said it, he noticed Josie Lynn, his boss’s daughter. She waved then giggled with her friends.

Nehemiah blushed until he remembered where he was and grimaced at Jeb.

“A ranch hand,” the Professor surmised. He pinched one of Nehemiah’s biceps, as if testing fruit for ripeness. Nehemiah jerked away. “My boy, this elixir could turn those flabby arms into firm muscle. Why, you would get your work done in half the time with a little help from my Wonder Punch!” He held up the square, green bottle. “Not to mention, twice the attention of the ladies!” he added with a wink. The audience loved that.

“So, Nehemiah, are you ready to try it?”

Nehemiah considered. He looked at Jeb, almost falling over, pretending to drink with his thumb. Carl still wore that frightening grin. He would test the potion by beating Nehemiah senseless. Then he saw Josie Lynn again. She looked hopeful. He guessed the worst that could happen was he’d keel over and die.

“Sure. What the heck.”

“Excellent.”

Nehemiah took a long swig.

Everyone hushed and waited for something to happen.

Nothing did.

The crowd started to murmur.

“Did it work?” Jeb yelled.

“Let’s see, shall we?” The professor directed their attention to a large black dumbbell marked 1000 lbs.

“You, sir. Would you mind coming up and demonstrating the truth of the weight?” he asked Carl.

Carl joined them on the stage. He got a good grip on the handle and heaved. The weight didn’t budge. He tried a few more times. Still nothing.

“Thank you, sir. You may step down.” Carl scratched his head and left the stage.

“Now, Nehemiah, it’s your turn.”

Nehemiah turned to the weight with a doubtful expression. If Carl couldn’t lift it, he surely couldn’t. He put both hands on it and pulled up.

It moved. He lifted some more and it rose higher. It wasn’t even heavy! He couldn’t believe it!

And neither could the crowd. They cheered and hollered. Jeb stared with his jaw hanging.

Nehemiah raised the weight higher and higher. Like a feather it floated up. He let go with one hand and the crowd went nuts.

“Amazing! Wonderful! Thank you, my boy! You may set it down now. Easy does it.”

As Nehemiah lowered the weight, he felt resistance. He realized he had been fooled. He let go of it completely and it lowered gently to the stage.

The crowd gasped then quickly turned into an angry mob. Nehemiah threw open the cover of the wagon revealing a complicated contraption controlled by the Professor’s assistant with a massive magnet for lifting the weight.

The crowd stormed the stage. “Help!” the Professor squeaked.

Nehemiah saw no need for lynching. The hooligan hadn’t taken their money. He picked up the Professor and held him over his head.

The crowd halted in amazement. Nehemiah had actually gotten stronger. The Professor was a good 250 pounds.

“Hey, look! That stuff actually works!” Jeb shouted. “I want some!” The rest of the people chimed in clamoring to buy the elixir.

Nehemiah looked confused, still holding the fat Professor over his head.

“Thanks, son. You can put me down now,” he said. Then he turned to the crowd. “See? Of course it works! If you would all form an orderly line I will gladly sell one to each of you at $2 a bottle.”

Josie Lynn ran over to Nehemiah coming off the stage, still dumbfounded that it worked. She squeezed his arm and swooned, “My hero!”

***

As they rode out of town, a gaunt Professor Cornelius counted his money and commented to his assistant, “Next time we should use bigger balloons under my coat.”

Scenery

I present yesterday's Drabble, brought to you by Aheila and the prompt: scenery

The beach relaxes my waning senses. Smell that air. Feel the ocean breeze. Listen to that... hammering!

"Woo woo! Hey, Kim! Check out the gams on that one!" I elbow her.

She adjusts her bifocals and squints. "What? Where? Who?"

I grab her saggy chin and swivel her head to look. "There, you blind old bat!"

"Oh my. He is a looker," she says spying over the top of her glasses and gives a whistle. The tan, 30ish, construction worker with no shirt and cut off jean shorts blushes.

"I told you there was nice scenery around here," I say and we cackle together.

Kick start Monday - Drabble Day

I'm still catching up, but I wanted to do this week's drabble! Thanks Aheila =)
The prompt for 100 words is "seek"

Ogre Personal Ad:

Hid-e-us, hairy ogress seek e-nor-mus, smelly, mirror-breaking male. Brain not needed, me do thinking. Must have big muscles for crushing skulls and ham hands to smash stuff in yard. Me like arm wrestle, tree-breaking tromps thru forest and troll raids. Me cook good. Me make best slug stew this side of swamp. Male must have big temper and hate kids. Me have one or two or four, can’t remember.

Fun first date: outrun dragon, mud slide down mountain then have to beat me at spitting contest.

Turn ons: scars, scabs, ingrown toenails and warts
Turn offs: flowers and rainbows

*knights don’t bother, me eat you

Don't slip!

Drabble Day, "Slip" (not really Freudian...guess I slipped there too)

I am a clumsy fool. I am not modest or humble, just truthful. I trip up stairs, slip on ice, hurt others accidentally when I’m trying to joke and have dropped my phone so many times it’s a wonder it works. These slips I live with and laugh along with you.

It’s the things that slip out of my mouth I have trouble owning. My personality is just do it! What consequences? And my bluntness has cost me a friend or two, offending without knowing. Just saying what I feel.

The only unregrettable slip I’ve taken, is falling for you.

No Place to Hide

Aheila's Drabble Day! 100 words on Dread (bonus points for not saying it)...

It’s coming. It’ll be here before you know it.

Say goodbye to peaceful silence. Ahead lay endless days of banshee screaming and hideous wailing.

The slimy, stinky, goo-covered creatures that howl all day and yip into the night are almost upon us. They seek their prey with jars and flashlights. Lock up your food supplies as gangs of them invade your home. Take them to water or field and hope they wear themselves out so they won’t attack you.

Oh, no! I hear the high pitched pulse of the last stop.

No more pencils, no more books – take cover! It’s summer!
