Consumer Reports says...Repair or Replace?

With the economy kicking us all when we're down, we really don't want to repair or replace anything. We want everything to keep working. How many of you had to deal with the air conditioner giving out this sweltering summer? Ours gave us the signal just before, so we didn't have to wait for service, but we still had to pay for it. It's hard to judge if something is worth repairing or replacing.

Well, Consumer Reports did some testing and they recommend that if something goes wrong, most major appliances should be repaired within their first five years and at least looked at after that. A fridge should last 8 years on repairs. But a microwave that breaks down in even 2-3 years should be replaced.

Electronics (including digital cameras, camcorders and TVs) should also do with being repaired within 5 years. But a PC, repair within 2-3 and after that replace. The technology only lasts that long anyway, these days!

A lawn mower should probably be replaced after 4-5 years if it breaks. But riding mowers, snowblowers and treadmills should be repaired.

Summer was way too busy. I thought things would slow down, but now school's back in! With our busy schedules it's hard to get everyone to sit down for a meal. We sometimes resort to fast food, but I try to limit it to once a week or less. Consumer Reports took some data from subscribers about Fast-Food Chains. Here's the top 3-5 from each category, based on food quality, value, service, and speed (notice that those pictured did not make the list!)
  • Burgers - In-N-Out Burger, Burgerville, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Culver's, Back Yard Burgers
  • Chicken - Chick-Fil-A, El Pollo Loco, Boston Market, Zaxby's
  • Sandwiches & Subs - Jason's Deli, Firehouse Subs, Jersey Mike's, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Jimmy John's
  • Mexican - Chipotle Mexican Grill, Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill, Qdoba Mexican Grill
  • Pizza - Papa Murphy's, Round Table Pizza, Little Caesars, Papa John's
Any of your favorites in there? I love Firehouse Subs! & Chick-Fil-A!

And finally, I had to include some tips from readers and staffers at Consumer Reports:
  • "Before you buy it, you're the boss. After you buy it, they're the boss."
  • "Don't buy the extended warranty."
  • "Press zero to get to a real person."
  • "Never go grocery shopping when you're hungry."
  • "If you don't need it, don't buy it."
  • "Never buy the first version of anything."
  • "If you want something, ask."
My advice is "Keep your receipt!" Do you have any shopping tips?

Consumer Reports says...Summer is Here

So in the July 2011 Consumer Reports issue they get a base hit with cleaning baseball stains, take second on an error and apply sunscreen, steal third with commentary on rip-off customer service and slide safe at home with some gas saving advice. Whew! What an inning! (ok, you may groan now)

Yes, I just got back from a humdinger of a little league game! We finally won! Woo hoo!

Anyway, here are the reports:

Top 5 Stain Removers:
Resolve, laundry
Shout, advanced action
Shout, triple acting
OxiClean, max force 4in1 power spray
Zout

Top Sunscreens:
SPF 30 - Banana Boat sport, Coppertone sport, CVS sport, Up & Up sport (Target brand =)
SPF 40 to 50 - No-Ad, Equate baby, Walgreens sport, Ocean Potion kids
SPF 50+ - Banana Boat sport, Aveeno, Coppertone, Neutrogena

Where's did the Customer Service Go?
Have you noticed customer service has been going down the toilet somewhat lacking? Here are results from the "Gripe-O-Meter" survey Consumer Reports took on America's top customer service gripes in stores and on the phone:
  1. Can't get a human on the phone (ME! I hate that one the most too! I especially hate having to TALK to the computer! I just keep saying "operator" til I get one)
  2. Salesperson is rude (or can't speak ENGLISH!)
  3. Many phone steps needed
  4. Long wait on hold
  5. Unhelpful solution
  6. Salesperson is too pushy (I don't mind hanging up on them, I don't have time to be nice sometimes)
  7. Extras are pitched
  8. No apology for unsolved problem
  9. Can't find store salesperson
  10. Boring hold music or messages (really? this is a complaint?)
  11. Wait at counter or checkout (I deal with it, especially since I might be holding up the line. I buy a ton of groceries...)
  12. Wait for scheduled repair (plan on it then be pleasantly surprised if they get done early)
Summer vacations may mean some driving...
Best Ways to Save Gas:
  • map it out before you leave
  • keep tires properly inflated, it really does save gas
  • don't put off that oil change or tune up, get it done before a long trip
  • if you'll be renting, get a car with good gas mileage
  • keep your eye on gas prices driving around town
  • on the highway, every 10mph faster you cruise = 5mpg you lose (like that one? ha ha)
  • try not to take off fast or brake suddenly, smooth & steady
  • lower wind resistance, a top of car carrier will lower mpg's
  • don't waste your money on premium gas unless your car specifically calls for it (most don't)
  • gas-saving gadgets are gimmicks, EPA also attests to this
Do you have any gripes or advice to share?

Consumer Reports says...Are you secure?

I'm a little late, but here is my report.
The June 2011 issue of Consumer Reports featured how to beef up security for your home as well as id theft and computer malware. (Timely!)

Advice for your Home:
  • don't make it easy! take the time to lock up! cars too! (we've had a bunch of car breakins recently, but they were "let-ins" because the cars weren't locked.)
  • don't advertise you're on vacation - make it look occupied, a toy in the yard, neighbors picking up your newspapers, etc.
  • shut your garage door!
  • use your house alarm system (guilty)
  • a gun is NOT your best defense - most people who buy guns for protection are not properly trained and do not secure their gun making it more of a risk to themselves than protection

Advice for your ID & Accounts:
  • use tougher passwords with letter and number combinations
  • try not to bank from public computers
  • shred bills, medical files and receipts (they also recommend destroying prescription labels)
  • cover yourself when entering pin number
  • know what should and shouldn't be on your credit card statement
Facebook advice:
  • set security for friends only and say no to allowing advertisers access to your info
  • preteens should NOT be on facebook, be aware
And here are some Ratings:
Security Software
Best Free Anti-Malware Program: Avira
Best Pay Security Suites: BitDefender, ESET, Avira, Norton, G Data & Kapersky (that's mine)
all rated very good performance and ease of use

Laptops

Toshiba 14 in #1, 6, 13 in #2, 8
Other honorable mentions

Tablets
Apple ipad and ipad2 still blow others away =)

Random Saturday - Looking to Lose Weight?

Me too. Let's see what Consumer Reports has to say about it.

6 pieces of advice to help keep pounds off:
  1. Stop drinking calories. Pops, juice, energy drinks = less filling and more sugar. So drink diet. (No one has studied the consumption of artificial sweetners long enough to attach them to cancer, yet.) Milk and limited alcohol consumption supposedly have enough healthy factors to equal out the calories and are slightly more filling. (I already do this one, they should've said coffee too)
  2. Eat more protein. Atkins type dieting has been studied and is now approved as a good way to lose weight. To be the most effective, protein intake should be 20-25% of total calories. Replacing some fat and starches with lean proteins can be beneficial. (I try to do this too, been slacking)
  3. Eat more fiber. Fiber is awesome! It regulates, helps prevent colon cancer and slows digestion making you feel fuller longer! Plus the foods it comes in have healthy vitamins and minerals. But go slow on the increase - fiber can backfire (if you know what I mean). (Another healthy thing I already partake of)
  4. Lead yourself not into temptation. Snacks. Mmmm. Crunchy, salty, flavorful, sweet - I need something good to eat! The best thing to do is not have these things in your house. Buy them on occasion. If you have them, you will eat them. (I try to buy snacks for the kids that I don't like. I have no trouble limiting their intake, I'm a mean mom)
  5. Add 2000 steps a day. 20-25 minutes of walking, about a mile, burns about 100 calories. (I walk my dog around the block when I get the mail or go to the bus stop - he needs exercise too)
  6. Cut your screen time. Sitting calories = sleeping calories. Even just standing burns twice the calories of sitting. (this has become a problem since I took up writing and blogging - so I started using my ipad on the treadmill =) Time to get up and move around!
So. This article isn't so much about losing weight as keeping off those extra couple of pounds that most people gain each year. Small modifications can increase your health and energy. I do most of these things and I am at a plateau. I need to do more if I want better results.
