How to Create Compelling Characters - the Wild Child

This week we have the Insecure Writers Support Group meeting.
With my new format, I try to encourage writers and give writing advice. But the IWSG is also a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or a crash-test dummy to smash if you need to let out frustrations. I actually did all of the above last week in my Really Real Housewives post, so I'm feeling much better.

My problems also took backseat perspective when I read some other way more serious circumstances of writers I'm friends with. I'm praying for C. Lee McKenzie (who just released a book and was struck by tragedy) and Cassie Mae (who's been a beloved example of finding joy in life and thankfully still with us). These  are blog-friends I've known and worked with for a long time. They're going through extremely rough patches and could use the support. Thank you.

And if you need to vent or celebrate - I'm listening!

Now, for my Character Advice...

Whether they know it or not, readers want to connect with characters. Readers love a book because they can relate to them. This connection steers the success or failure of a book. If readers don't like the characters, they don't care what happens to them and they'll put the book down, or not buy it in the first place. But how do we write good, quality, jump-off-the-page characters?

Here are my humble suggestions for traits of Compelling Characters:
  • Use qualities that remind readers of themselves or those close to them - keep characters realistic. Ask the question: "Would someone really do that?" And if your character does it anyway, they better have a darn good reason--motivation other than just moving the story along.
  • Not all good guys are perfect - they have flaws; not all bad guys are evil to the core - they have redeeming features. Just like in life, some traits are hidden, but come out eventually!
  • Characters act the way they do for a reason - they aren't just nice or mean for the sake of the scene, there's got to be deeper roots to their personality traits. Readers see through fake, flat characters - like "B-movie actors," not worth their time or money.
Example: The WILD CHILD
This week is my middle son's 18th birthday - can you believe it? I certainly can't! He's my Wild Child, the Act-first/Pay-later, no risk too great Daredevil. His "Wonder Years" have been a complete saga, and we keep wondering if he will survive Part 2: Life In the Real World.

We pick up as the saga continues... My adventurous son has decided to forego college (for which he got a nice scholarship) and join the Army. He's been a "Me do it!" kid since he was two, so once he's made his mind up, there's no convincing him otherwise. It was unexpected, but not a complete shock. We've learned to just go with it, for the most part. We support whatever choice he makes and hope for the best.

I say all this to introduce him as a perfect Wild Child main character: He's hilarious, smart, and handsome - with zero thought for consequences. This has led him into trouble many times - perfect for an action movie with tons of pitfalls he has to figure his way out of. He's super sweet with an innocence about him, yet so mischievous and ornery. A lady-killer who hates to be told what to do and has trouble admitting when he's wrong. Like Han Solo or Peter Quill. That's my Logan.

And I love every bit of him, wouldn't change a thing. When he calls, you know it's serious -- I just cringe and bear it. One of these days, I'll write his action hero adventure story - I've got so much material!

~ * ~ * ~     ~ * ~ * ~     ~ * ~ * ~

And of course, I need to give my weekly SHOUT OUT!

We've been friends from the beginning--blogging beginnings, that is. We've helped each other through tough writing blocks, first book publishings, and dealing with not-so-friendly situations. Meeting Heather in person is definitely on my bucket list - as well as she lives in New York, a place I suppose I have to go sometime as the birthplace of the publishing industry in the US, right?

Heather writes Romantic Thrillers, starting with the juicy Maguire's Corner series, One Good Catch and Already Home. I'm not big on Romance, but Heather's got talent and kept my attention! She also shares the load as an Insecure Writers Support Group admin, as well as a caretaker of some unruly gnomes. A truer writing confidant you'll never find. So glad I know her. Stop by her place and say hello - she'd love it!

Have a great week, you guys. Thanks for stopping by!

See a Need, Fill a Need

One of my favorite movie lines...Robots, Ewan McGregor, and productivity have been on my mind lately. Though summer just officially started on June 20, my summer is half over! I have so much I still need to accomplish. Here's my summer homework list:
  • WIP - DISPOSAL, I finished the first draft, but I really want to finish 2 rounds of edits and send to CPs (I could also use one beta reader - if you're interested, let me know)
  • Finish 2 short stories for future submissions - I have a thousand ideas and started stories, but most of my time is dedicated to the WIP... really hard to choose one or two to work on! (One is about robot teachers!)
  • Start rough draft of WHEN THE WIND BLOWS (3rd Broken Branch Falls)
  • Coordinate Cradle Rock release blog/review tour - I already have a couple of review volunteers but could use a couple more, let me know if you're up for it or if you'd like to help with the cover reveal in Sept!
  • Finish reading 3 books - this is supposed to be summer vacation after all.
I've chipped away at my list, but it's funny how things come up that we magically make time for, especially if they're fun. Like for me, it's scrapbooks. I was able to visit my grandma and I wanted to bring her a gift. My dad told me what she likes best is photos - so I made her a small scrapbook.
Then my sister reminded me our parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary this month! Egadz! Well they don't like making a big deal out of things, not even huge milestones like this, so again, I took the time to make them a scrapbook (memories seem to be the most valued treasure as we get older) But the hardest scrapbook/slide show project I am about to embark on is for my first born son who will be a senior this year. I'm going to have to go to Costco and stock up on tissues, I fear.

Meets 1st Wed of Month
1st Wed each month
Which all brings me to this month's IWSG post. We all have so much to do these days. But when other things come up, it's okay to get sidetracked and take care of them - whether out of necessity or just to take a well-deserved time-out for yourself. As long as we go back to work! And our work will be better for it.

Thinking about this recently, I was inspired to write a poem...

In Need

A gray cloud...needs to cry
A thorny branch...needs pruning
A scratchy throat...needs silence
A wilted flower...needs a talk

A smudged mirror...needs cleansing
A lone straggler...needs direction
A bad grade...needs focus
A charged firework...needs a spark

A red light...needs patience
A sore head...needs peace
A big winner...needs humility
A sad soul...needs a hug

Thanks always to Alex J. Cavanaugh for getting us together each month and to his helpful co-hosts!

Goings on...

Only a week ago, TB Markinson released her romantic comedy novel! What a cover!

THE MIRACLE GIRL
by TB Markinson

Newspaper publisher and world traveler JJ Cavendish continually feels pressured to live up to her Miracle Girl nickname. Not many people know she’s living a carefully crafted lie. She may not hide ties to the LGBT community, but she does hide past struggles with addiction.

When the Colorado native is handpicked to take the helm at a dying Denver newspaper, she ends up reconnecting with her long lost love in this contemporary lesbian romance. Only there’s a catch. If JJ fires the most belligerent editor at the paper, she risks losing the love of her life.

Mid-afternoon office romps abound, while also focusing on what it takes for a newspaper to remain relevant in this age of social media.

Must JJ lose everything in order to gain a life more fully her own?

Can't unPOP a balloon

Hey Gang!
Since I've only been able to post once or twice a week, I'm doing my celebration today! Thanks, Vikki, for hosting this great weekly hop!

First, I'm celebrating with my bloggy friends in new releases (like Crystal Collier's Moonless) and cover reveals (like the Dragonfly Warrior by Jay Noel) - congrats and many more!

I'm also celebrating with my friends Julie & Lexi - hosting the sweet Dream Destination blog hop - they've had so many supporters offering prizes, even an agent critique! Definitely try to sign up! All you have to do is post about where you'd love to visit. It takes place Dec 5-8. Check it out!

I'm celebrating with my friends who are plugging away with Nano - I love seeing updates on facebook, twitter, and the blogs. Keep going!

As for my own celebrations...

  • I've made some progress in spare moments on SIMULATION, tweeting some quotes. I'm loving how this story is coming along and can't wait to share it with my little fan base! ha! (Vikki, don't worry. You get the first read!) Sometimes writing just feels so right!
  • Looking forward to visiting Michelle's blog next Tuesday with some Pop Travel out-takes. Fun!
  • And lastly. Yay for Scorpios! Wednesday (20th) is my bday!
I look forward to reading your celebrations on Friday!

Popcorn, chips, and CAKE!

I'm celebrating with my little guy, who is not going to stay little for long. On Wednesday, he turned 10!

For his birthday, he is having some other little guys for a sleepover and a movie the next day. Should be fun and wild! Boys are so silly!

Speaking of silly. I'm also celebrating with my middle guy and his successful football season in middle school. Next year he plays in 9th grade. Hard to believe!

We had a picnic for the crazy guys and it was fun to see them play and be silly!

And finally, I'm celebrating four years of blogging (it was actually in Sept, but you know how busy I've been, sadly, blogging less!). Hard to believe that too!

These celebrations brought to you by Vikki's weekly hop! Thanks, Vik!

It's been a happy birthday month!

What's your favorite birthday song? If you're singing, thank you!
I looked up some alternative birthday songs and picked this one from the 80s! Love the 80s!

I have had a truly wonderful birthday month so far!
  • Started with a successful Thankful hop with my buddy, Vikki who also helped me by critting my current WIP and I'm over halfway thru another round of editing.
  • Cassie and you all helped make our 500 followersary (ha ha) celebration an outstanding party!
  • and I was flabbergasted at the response to the Miss You fest - so much love here in the blogosphere!
  • finally, I patiently (somewhat) waited for the next phase of my publishing process and happily got instructions this weekend. I am excited to be working on that now!
I also received some tags and awards that I have collected to post on my birthday =) They are gifts, after all!

Thanks Darling Nicki (sorry, hee)! And Lovely Laura! They both passed me "U Got the Look" (no button, so I made one, of course!)

This is how it works - take your current manuscript, search for the word “look,” and post the surrounding paragraphs. Then tag 5 blogging authors. So here's a quick section from Broken Branch Falls, MG Fantasy:

A lame attempt at a bird call makes us laugh.
“Ca-caw, woot, woot.”
“Come on up, Jordy,” Argus yells to him.
“What kind of bird is that?” I ask. We each extend a hand to him.
“You’re a melonhead,” Argus teases.
“What? We don’t have a secret code anymore?”
Argus looks at me. We shake our heads and laugh some more.
“Not since third grade.”

Tamara probably thought I forgot, but she gave me the icing on the cake with the Sweet Award - thanks, girl! I answered those questions a few weeks ago, here are my answers again, just for fun...
Cookies, ChocolateBrowniesAfter a meal or salty snack, Pumpkin
If you'd like to snatch a sweet award, be my guest! You can see the original post for the questions =P

And Elizabeth tagged me with the Next Big Thing meme. I have done this with Pop Travel and Broken Branch Falls so I don't want to bore everyone doing it again, but I appreciate the tag! I would still like to pass it on too. So I'm naming five bloggers who can choose which award or meme they would like, if any...

Tagging - TamaraAnnalisaJulie LMary P, and Ellie G!

Surprise!

I'm 2! And it's a big surprise to me!

Yes, it's my Blogaversary. Anyone know what the gift is to celebrate two years?
Me neither!
*searches*
It's cotton! Woo hoo! cotton candy for everyone!

Blogging has been so fun! I can't believe it's been two years. And I have some other reasons to be excited too:
  • I'm getting close to 500 followers, woot!
  • I finished my camp nano book, though I didn't get to 50,000 words, yet. But I'm sure with editing I will get there.
  • and best of all! I got a request for a full for POP TRAVEL! My first one!
What better way to celebrate than to give stuff away?!

How 'bout a couple of books:
Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King
or
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
or
A personalized graphic design by me? I've been making buttons and banners for friends and I also do business cards and fun, inspirational covers!

All you have to do is comment and let me know what you'd like. Then I will randomly select winners. EASY! I'll leave it open for a week (9/6)

Thanks for following me around and keeping me going!

Happy Birthday, Mom!

I celebrate today!

It's more than the end
Of another year through
More than a party
Ringing in new

On this special day
Some years ago
Inspiration was born
In a time filled with woe

The world has been blessed
By this humble spirit
Strong and creative
Perfection or near it

My mother has made it
Through many hard trials
And no matter what
She brings me her smiles

So here's to my mom
Enjoy your birthday!
You deserve happiness!
Do it your way!

No Regrets

Happy Birthday to Me!
I'm celebrating all weekend!

In Disney World!
Here is my birthday schedule for Sunday:
Breakfast at Chef Mickey's
Rides at Hollywood Studios
Lunch at Mama Melrose's
Fantasmic Lazer Light Show
Dinner and Fireworks at the Crystal Palace
then more rides
in the Magic Kingdom!

Okay, I'll stop rubbing it in. But the best part is that I can still share a slumber party with all my friends! I hope you have a story for me - that's my favorite present! Here is my most memorable slumber party:

No Regrets

We took our final bows and the curtain came down. We jumped and clapped and ran off stage. The final night of our junior high musical had been a great success!

While we changed, the energy in the dressing room exploded as we chattered about the big cast party at Cara's.

Pizza, pop, boys, music! We had such an awesome time! And when the party was over, I got to spend the night. Tara, Cara, and Cara - the three musketeers!

We gossiped and did each other's hair. (my first french braid!) We snuck into Cara's older brother's room to snoop around. (my first time in a non-relative boy's room!) We played truth or dare and told our secrets and snacked and made prank calls and stayed up all night (or tried to).

In the morning I tasted my first breakfast of cold pizza - who knew!? Best invention ever!

Looking back, you know what we didn't need? cell phones! internet! We only needed each other. We bonded and grew. A taste of independence without losing any innocence. (and no one got filmed to be embarrassed on you tube!)

I'll be around, looking for yours =)

PS - Here's a treat for you. I know Starbucks wanted to celebrate my birthday. They are doing a BUY ONE HOLIDAY DRINK, GET ONE FREE - NOV 17th - 20th! So have a BOGO on me! hee hee

He doesn't like me to talk about him on this thing...but

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Saturday, October 16, 2010

It's great to be 7!

Happy Birthday to my little guy!

May he always keep his chin up.
May he laugh more than he cries.
I love to watch him when he plays
Because I know he always tries
his best.

Seven's a great age to be.
Innocent and wondrous and
fearless and full of energy.
And still willing to lend a hand
to me.

Don't baby me or coddle,
don't embarrass me.
But kiss me when I fall off
my bike and skin my knee.
I love you.
